Αφού εργάστηκε αρχικά στη βιομηχανία της μόδας, συνειδητοποίησε ότι η αληθινή του αγάπη ήταν η δημιουργία ταινιών.

Μετακόμισε στο Λος Άντζελες, όπου ξεκίνησε τη δουλειά του ως σχεδιαστής κοστουμιών σε ταινίες του Γούντι Άλεν, μεταξύ άλλων.

Το πρώτο σενάριο του Σουμάχερ ήταν για το μουσικό δράμα Sparkle το 1976.
